Financial Aid Checklist

The first step to apply for federal and state financial aid is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Financial Aid professionals are available to assist applicants in completing the FAFSA.

The FAFSA is located online at studentaid.gov. Due to processing times for financial aid, applicants should apply four (4) to six (6) weeks before the anticipated enrollment term. Grant programs operate on an award year basis beginning July 1 and ending June 30.

Students must apply or reapply each year to receive or continue receiving financial aid. The FAFSA is available online effective October 1 of each year.

Application Procedures

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the application for all Federally–funded Financial Aid programs and can be completed online at http://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa.

**Please make sure that you wait until the IRS accepts your tax return and those of your parents for Dependent students prior to completing the FAFSA and that you use the IRS Transfer Tool to populate the tax information on your FAFSA. If you do not use the transfer tool, you will be selected for Verification and will have to acquire tax transcripts from the IRS. We will not be able to accept a copy of your tax return.

Students who do not wish to complete the FAFSA may apply for state financial aid by completing the Georgia Student Financial Aid Application (GSFAPP) online at Gafutures.org. The FAFSA is required for students applying for the Student Access Loan (SAL) administered through the Georgia Student Finance Authority (GSFA). Unlike the GSFAPP, the FAFSA considers federal and state financial aid opportunities for students. The FAFSA is the preferred application for applicants attending Southern Crescent Technical College.
